For short trips in and around town, most people opt for a Tuk-Tuk or "Sam-Law" as they are called in this part of the Thailand (the litteral translation of which being "Three Wheels"). A sam-law / tuk tuk from the train station to the border point or to town should cost about 50baht per person, but be aware that there is a tendency for the drivers to initially ask for more from western tourists, especially at the train station. Remember that any price they suggest is open to negotiation and that, as is often the case in Thailand, patience, politeness and a friendly smile on your part will work in your favour!
If you are staying in Nong Khai, you may prefer the freedom of having a bike or motor bike on which to explore the town and the surrounding attractions and countryside. There are many places in town that ofer bike and motorbike rentals. Prices vary, but expect to pay about 250 - 300Baht per day for a motorbike or 40Baht per day for a bicycle.
If you are travelling in a larger group or plan to venture further afield, there are a number of companies offering car hire. Although there are not too many car hire companies in Nong Khai itself, many in Udon Thani will drop off cars for you in Nong Khai. If you are flying to Udon Thani, you can also arrange car hire in the airport it's self, simplifying your transit to Nong Khai.
There are a number of tour operaters in Nong Khai that can take you by airconditioned mini bus to the attractions within Nong Khai Province, and surrounding provinces.
Nong Khai bus station in the centre of town is a busy transport hub providing regular services to other destinations within Nong Khai Province. Contact the Nong Khai bus terminal (Just off Prajak Raoad) for further details on 042 411 582.
